TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The government of Aceh sent letters to two United Nations agencies—the United Nations Development Program (UNDP) and the United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF)—inviting them to participate in the recovery efforts following the floods and landslides.
Government Spokesperson Muhammad MTA stated that the regional government reached out to international agencies that are currently running programs in Indonesia. "Yes, it is true, we have written to UNDP and UNICEF to participate in post-disaster recovery," said Muhammad MTA, confirming on Sunday, December 14, 2025.
UNDP focuses on national development, including poverty eradication and inequality reduction, while UNICEF focuses on child welfare.
According to Muhammad, UNDP and UNICEF are official UN agencies that have long collaborated with the Indonesian government, including in Aceh. He mentioned that UNICEF has ongoing programs in Aceh until early 2026, making it relevant to be involved in the recovery process after the disaster.
The government of Aceh hopes that the involvement of these international agencies will strengthen recovery efforts, particularly in sectors with each agency's area of expertise. "Therefore, we as the regional government take the initiative to ensure that these international agencies that are still active in Indonesia can continue to be in Aceh, especially in the current disaster situation," he said.
Muhammad MTA added that the assistance provided by UNDP and UNICEF will be tailored to each agency's core tasks, functions, and institutional programs. He mentioned that the two agencies will coordinate further with the central government and other relevant institutions to handle the post-disaster recovery efforts in Aceh.
The National Disaster Management Agency (BNPB) reported that the death toll has surpassed one thousand as of Saturday, December 13, 2025. In the emergency response geoportal dashboard for floods and landslides in Aceh, North Sumatra, and West Sumatra, the BNPB reported a total of 1,003 deaths.
Aceh province has the highest number of fatalities. The BNPB recorded at least 415 people dead due to floods and landslides in various districts and cities in the Land of Rencong. This figure shows that Aceh was the hardest hit by the series of hydrometeorological disasters that struck the island of Sumatra.
Outside Aceh, the BNPB recorded 347 fatalities in North Sumatra and 241 in West Sumatra. The accumulation of casualties indicates an increasing trend compared to the BNPB report the day before. On December 12, 2025, the BNPB recorded a total of 995 deaths, resulting in an additional eight fatalities within a day.
