TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - A shooting incident tragically struck the Bondi Beach area of Sydney, Australia, on Sunday, December 14, 2025. The attack claimed 15 lives and injured dozens of people across the site.
Amid the chaos, a civilian, Ahmed al Ahmed, was instantly hailed as a hero for bravely intervening and subduing one of the shooters who was actively attacking civilians. The Australian public has widely praised the unarmed man for his swift action in disarming the perpetrator.
A widely circulated 15-second video, cited by NDTV, showed the unarmed Muslim man hiding behind parked cars before running toward one of the culprits from behind. He successfully grabbed the perpetrator's neck, seized the firearm, forced the man to the ground, and pointed the weapon back at him. His actions are believed to have saved numerous lives.
Ahmed al Ahmed, a 43-year-old fruit vendor, reportedly sustained two gunshot wounds during his heroic intervention. He was scheduled for surgery that night. Reports indicate that Ahmed had no prior experience with firearms and was merely passing through the area when he made the split-second decision to act.
His courage and quick response drew widespread praise on social media, and Prime Minister Anthony Albanese personally referred to him as a "hero."
Details of the Shooting
Police confirmed that at least 15 people were killed in the attack, which targeted the Jewish community during a Hanukkah event at Bondi Beach. Twenty-nine individuals, including a child, were transported to the hospital.
The New South Wales Police have officially declared the incident a terrorist attack, which occurred as hundreds gathered to commemorate the first day of Hanukkah. The Israeli Ministry of Foreign Affairs confirmed that one of the victims was an Israeli citizen.
The alleged perpetrators were identified as Sajid Akram and his son, Naveed Akram. The father, Sajid, was killed at the scene, while his son, Naveed, was injured and remains in critical condition in the hospital.
Speaking to journalists on Monday morning, NSW Police Commissioner Mal Lanyon stated that Sajid Akram had been a licensed firearm owner for the past decade. "He has six firearms licensed to him. We have satisfied that we have six firearms from the scene yesterday," Commissioner Lanyon was quoted as saying by ABC.
Lanyon noted that authorities had limited prior knowledge about the two men. "The person was determined to be entitled to have a firearms licence and had a firearms licence," Lanyon said, confirming police believe only two people were directly involved in the attack.
