TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Coordinating Minister for Economic Affairs, Airlangga Hartarto, stated that Indonesia's bid to join the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) requires unanimous approval from all member countries. This consent is necessary from every nation within the club of developed countries, including Israel.

Airlangga reaffirmed that Indonesia's stance regarding the possibility of normalizing relations with Israel remains consistent with the position announced by President Prabowo Subianto during the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) in September 2025. In his speech, Prabowo stated that Indonesia would recognize Israel as a country only if Israel, in turn, acknowledges Palestine as an independent and sovereign state.

"The President's speech at the UNGA was clear, and I believe it is evident that if Israel resolves the political issue with Palestine, that is when the [relation normalization] process with Indonesia will take place," Airlangga told reporters during a press conference at his office on Thursday, December 11, 2025.

Israel is one of the 38 permanent member countries of the OECD. As is known, Indonesia is currently undergoing the lengthy process of seeking full membership in the international organization.

Indonesia has been a key partner of the OECD since 2007. The application for full membership began in mid-2023, and Indonesia became an accession candidate in 2024.

"Indonesia is the first ASEAN country to pursue accession to the OECD, but following us, Thailand has already submitted an initial memorandum, indicating that several ASEAN countries are striving to obtain OECD accession," Airlangga noted.

Currently, Indonesia is in the crucial technical review period. This week, an OECD secretariat team, led by the Deputy Secretary General, is conducting a visit to directly observe Indonesia's acceleration process for technical review preparation. The three initial sectors being reviewed and verified are trade, environment, and digital economy.
