9 hours ago 5

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) has detected the Tropical Cyclone Mekkhala in the northeast of the Philippines. This cyclone developed from Tropical Cyclone 92W, which approached the Tropical Cyclone Warning Center (TCWC) in Jakarta on June 19.

The maximum wind speed of Tropical Cyclone Mekkhala is predicted to decrease in the next 24 hours. "But the intensity is still in category four with a movement towards the northwest," as stated in the BMKG's official statement on Tuesday afternoon, June 23, 2026.

Tropical Cyclone Mekkhala is expected to have an indirect impact on Indonesian waters. Its wind is likely to cause medium waves measuring 1.25-2.5 meters in the Waters of the Sangihe Islands-Talaud Islands, the Maluku Sea, and the North Maluku Pacific Ocean.

BMKG also issued an early warning of high waves reaching 2.5-4 meters that may appear in several maritime areas. "The potential of high waves in those areas may pose a risk to maritime safety," according to BMKG's statement.

From June 23-26, high waves are predicted to appear in the western Indian Ocean off Bengkulu, the western Indian Ocean off Lampung, the southern Indian Ocean off Banten, the southern Indian Ocean off West Java, the southern Indian Ocean off Central Java, and in the southern sea of Yogyakarta.
