TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Ceuta's Mayor-President, Juan Jesus Vivas, urged the government to immediately deport all illegal migrants who entered the autonomous Spanish territory in a mass influx from Morocco.
Vivas called for the immediate return of all migrants who entered Ceuta illegally during the recent wave, saying they should be sent back through the Tarajal border crossing. He made the remarks to reporters after meeting with Spain's King Felipe VI on Thursday, according to ANTARA.
Vivas said Ceuta was facing a humanitarian situation it could not handle alone, with some 3,000 to 6,000 migrants still in the territory despite ongoing transfers to mainland Spain. He added that the most worrying conditions occurred among underage children.
According to Vivas, the facilities available in Ceuta are only designed to accommodate around 90 unaccompanied children, but there are currently around 1,100 children under state protection.
Vivas stressed that the incident should not be seen as a simple migration crisis, but rather as a violation of the territorial integrity of Spain and the European Union that requires decisive action from the government.
Last week, Ceuta, an autonomous Spanish territory located in North Africa and directly bordering Morocco, experienced a large surge in migrant arrivals.
Around 60,000 people were reported to have entered the territory in just one day, while Ceuta's population is estimated at 85,000.
Several officials from EU member states, including Denmark, Italy, the Czech Republic and Finland, have also called for the temporary suspension of Spain's membership in the Schengen area.
