Changi Airport Breaks Ground on Terminal 5 to Meet Growing Air Travel Demand

3 hours ago 1

TEMPO.CO, JakartaSingapore has begun construction on Terminal 5 at Changi Airport to address the rising number of air travelers in the Asia-Pacific region. The groundbreaking ceremony was officiated by Singapore’s Prime Minister Lawrence Wong on Wednesday, May 14, 2025.

According to Travel and Leisure, Terminal 5 is expected to begin operations by mid-2030. Upon completion, Singapore Airlines and its budget subsidiary Scoot will consolidate their services at the new terminal.

The upcoming Terminal 5 is designed to handle around 50 million passengers annually. This expansion will bring Changi Airport’s total capacity to approximately 140 million passengers per year, an increase from its current 90 million capacity across the existing four terminals.

With this development, the airport aims to boost its air connectivity to 200 cities, up from around 170 at present.

Yam Kum Weng, Chief Executive Officer of Changi Airport Group, said this major terminal project would effectively double the airport’s current size.

"With a portfolio of terminals, Changi will be better positioned to serve the growing needs of different airlines," he stated, as quoted by the Business Times.

Key Features of Terminal 5 at Changi Airport

  • Terminal 5 will be situated in the Changi East area, covering an extensive 1,080-hectare site.

  • The terminal will consist of three interconnected sections served by automated people movers, similar to the current skytrain system.

  • Its construction will incorporate climate-resilient technologies to withstand extreme weather and long-term climate change.

  • The terminal will feature three runways, and a second air traffic control tower will be built to manage increased flight volumes.

  • Automation, advanced digital technologies, and artificial intelligence will be embedded throughout the terminal.

  • Clean energy will be used to power the terminal, including solar panels installed on the rooftop, to help reduce the airport’s carbon footprint.

Enhanced Accessibility Including Sea Transport

Terminal 5 is being designed with improved accessibility in mind, offering travelers multiple options for reaching the airport.

In addition to MRT lines and road access, the terminal will be reachable from the sea thanks to its proximity to the Tanah Merah Ferry Terminal.

By MRT:

The Thomson-East Coast MRT line will provide a direct link from Terminal 5 to the city center and to the Johor Bahru-Singapore Rapid Transit System Link terminal in Woodlands North. The Cross Island Line will also serve the terminal, connecting it to areas such as the Punggol Digital District and the Jurong Lake District.\

Meanwhile, the Aviation Park MRT station will improve access to the Changi Airfreight Centre and Changi East Industrial Zone.

By Road:

A new road along the Changi Southern Corridor will connect the terminal to Tanah Merah Coast Road, East Coast Parkway, and the Pan-Island Expressway.

By Sea:

Air-to-sea transfers will be supported through direct links with the Tanah Merah Ferry Terminal.

This terminal offers ferry connections to Indonesia via Bintan and to Malaysia through Desaru, enhancing regional connectivity for travelers.
