TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - China on Wednesday denied providing weapons to support Cambodia in its latest border clash with Thailand.
Beijing stressed that its defense cooperation with both Southeast Asian countries is historical and not directed at any third party.
The statement was made by a spokesperson of the Chinese Ministry of Foreign Affairs and shared by the Chinese Embassy in Bangkok, following reports that Thai troops seized Chinese-made military equipment, including anti-tank missiles, near the Chong An Ma gap.
At a regular press conference on December 17, the spokesperson for the Chinese Ministry of Foreign Affairs responded to questions about the origin of the ammunition found at the conflict site.
"China engaged in normal defence cooperation with both Thailand and Cambodia," as reported by Antara.
"That it neither targeted any third party nor had anything to do with clashes along the border," the spokesperson added.
Earlier, Thai military officials reported finding several Chinese-made weapons systems following a confrontation at the Chong An Ma Gap.
The discovery has raised concerns about the possibility of military assistance from external parties.
Beijing emphasized its neutral stance, stating that the presence of Chinese military equipment in the area resulted from a long-term bilateral agreement and was not a recent intervention.
