TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The game titled Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 won the Game of the Year award at The Game Awards 2025. Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 was released on April 24 and features a Role-Playing Game (RPG) genre that combines elements of science fiction and fantasy in its storyline.
The idea behind Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 first emerged in 2019. Guillaume Broche and Nicholas Masxon-Francombe collaborated to create this fantasy RPG game, inspired by their favorite childhood game, Final Fantasy.
Citing player testimonials reviewed by Game Informer, Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 is indeed deserving of prestigious accolades in the global gaming industry. The game's storyline, produced by Sandfall Interactive/Kepler Interactive, is mentioned to captivate players with its mixture of scientific fantasy.
The game's plot initially takes players to Lumire, a world that lives under the shadow of the Paintress's terror. Players are introduced to the mysterious giant figure, who appears once a year to paint a number on a mountain pillar.
Visually, Clair Obscur has been praised as a moving painting inspired by the Belle poque era of France, but with a grim undertone. The use of Unreal Engine 5 plays a role in creating detailed and atmospheric environments, such as the captivating underwater area at the beginning of the game.
The game also features a melancholic piano accompaniment throughout the player's journey, adding adrenaline and satisfaction as they attempt to complete the game. Moreover, what players find most appealing about this game is its dense, focused story that avoids wasting time with irrelevant character backgrounds.
Furthermore, each character has a clear storyline regarding their existence in the game, contributing to the game's suitable duration. The adventure is not tedious like other RPG games that sometimes bore players.

The Game Awards 2025 took place in Los Angeles, USA, on December 11. For the Game of The Year category, Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 successfully surpassed Death Stranding 2: On The Beach, Donkey Kong Bananza, Hades II, Hollow Knight: Silksong, and Kingdom Come: Deliverance II.
In total, there were 29 categories in The Game Awards 2025, including Best Game Direction, Best Narrative, Best Art Direction, Best Score and Music, Best Audio Design, and even Best Performance for individuals in voice-over, motion, and/or performance capture roles. There were also categories like Best Independent Game, Best Mobile Game, Best VR/AR, Best Adaptation, and Best Esports Team.
