TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - A narration claiming that Pertamina will phase out Pertalite fuel in 2027 has been circulating through dozens of posts across Instagram [archive], Facebook, TikTok, and X. This content features screenshots of news stories claiming that Pertamina will phase out Pertalite next year. This disinformation spread just after the price hike for Pertamax (RON 92) and Pertamax Green 95 (RON 95) in the second week of June 2026.
However, is it true that Pertamina will phase out Pertalite after the Pertamax price hike?
FACT CHECK
Tempo verified the content by searching for credible information using search engines and keywords. The results showed that the narrative manipulated old news from 2023 that was unrelated to current reality. The plan to switch to subsidized fuel at that time has not yet been realized.
The screenshot circulated is a clip from a CNN Indonesia news broadcast regarding Pertamina's policy plans for 2023. At the time, Pertamina President Director Nicke Widyawati proposed replacing Pertalite with Pertamax Green 92 to meet exhaust emission standards set by the Ministry of Environment and Forestry (KLHK).
As reported by Tempo, Pertamax Green 92 is a blend of Pertalite (RON 90) with 7 percent ethanol (E7) to boost the octane rating to a minimum of RON 91, in accordance with KLHK quality standards. Through the Blue Sky Phase 2 program, Pertamina plans to focus on supplying three products: Pertamax (RON 92), Pertamax Green 95 (RON 95), and the upcoming Pertamax Green 92.
The then-Coordinating Minister for Maritime Affairs and Investment, Luhut Binsar Pandjaitan, stated at the time that the government was reviewing the proposal. The Pertalite subsidy allocation is planned to be transferred to a new, more environmentally friendly fuel variant. Meaning, the policy does not eliminate the subsidy, but rather shifts it to low-emission fuel.
"Yes, we will continue to monitor (the price of Pertamax Green 92) so as to not burden the public. That's the key," Luhut stated on Wednesday, September 6, 2023.
To date, there has been no operational follow-up to the plan to replace this subsidized fuel type. This agenda has also remained unchanged since Pertamina leadership was transferred to Simon Aloysius Mantiri in 2024.
Corporate Secretary of Pertamina Patra Niaga, Roberth MV Dumatubun, explained that the distribution of subsidized fuel fully complies with government regulations and the Downstream Oil and Gas Regulatory Agency (BPH Migas). Currently, Pertamina continues to distribute Pertalite as normal.
"Referring to the government's statement and Pertamina's statement, the government and Pertamina are currently committed to distributing subsidized fuel (Pertalite & Biosolar) and there will be no price adjustments, as these are subsidized commodities," Roberth said when contacted by Tempo on Wednesday, June 24, 2026.
