Gemini Users Can Now Build AI-Powered Mini Apps with Opal

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Google has once again made a breakthrough in artificial intelligence (AI) by integrating the experimental "Opal" project into the web version of Gemini. This step allows ordinary users to create AI-powered mini apps by using natural language commands or prompts.

This innovation is expected to simplify the software development process that has long been considered complex. With AI, every user skilled in using prompts will be able to design mini-scale applications for learning purposes.

According to Android Authority, Opal technically works by combining prompts, large language models (LLM), and various tools in one integrated ecosystem. Google designed this system to be able to process natural instructions and turn them into real-time running application logic. It's similar to having a personal developer assistant ready to realize ideas at any time.

One significant update brought by Google in this integration is the enhancement of Opal's visual editor. There is a new interface that automatically converts user instructions into a list of structured steps. This feature is claimed to make it easier for users to see the workflow of their mini applications and make edits if there are inaccurate functions.

How to Access Opal Feature

To use this feature, users simply open the menu in the top right corner of the Gemini page and select the "Gems" option. There, a list of ready-to-use mini apps created by Google Labs will be displayed.

However, Google emphasizes that Opal is not part of the standard Gemini Apps package, so its activity data is treated differently. Data generated when using this tool will not appear in Gemini Apps Activity and is unrelated to privacy terms in Google Workspace.

The Opal project was first announced as part of the Google Labs initiative last July, but its integration into Gemini has just begun. This launch signifies that the technology has been deemed mature enough to be tested by a wider audience, although it is still labeled as experimental.

For Android users and other Google ecosystems, the presence of Opal could mean access to more personalized digital solutions in the future. For example, this could be used by teachers creating a specific history lesson quiz app for their students, or a home cook designing an automatic recipe converter app.

However, users are still advised to be cautious and understand the limitations of the AI-powered apps. Because they are generated by a machine, the application logic may not always be perfect or free from bugs.
