TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Minister of Indonesian Migrant Worker Protection (P2MI), Mukhtarudin, claimed that there are no Indonesian migrant workers in Thailand and Cambodia. He ensured that there was no information regarding the presence of Indonesian citizens in the midst of the two conflicting countries.
"Until today, there is none, no one yet. There are no of our migrant workers who are threatened," said Mukhtarudin when met at the P2MI Ministry Office in Jakarta on Monday, December 15, 2025.
He explained that Thailand and Cambodia are not included in the placement countries for Indonesian workers. Both countries are said not to meet the security requirements set by the Indonesian government.
Nevertheless, the Golkar politician stated that his ministry will continue to monitor the situation in Cambodia and Thailand. The P2MI Ministry, he said, will collaborate with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs to directly communicate with the Indonesian Embassy in the two bordering countries.
The government will ensure that there are no Indonesian citizens trapped in the escalating war. "We will continuously monitor the developments there. Once there are Indonesian citizens under threat, certainly the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the Indonesian Embassy, together with P2MI, will be at the forefront," said Mukhtarudin.
The border conflict between Thailand and Cambodia resurfaced on Thursday, December 11, 2025. The two countries exchanged gunfire around an ancient temple complex. According to CNA, the battle resulted in 15 deaths, consisting of Thai soldiers and Cambodian civilians.
These two countries have long debated the 800-kilometer border, which includes a number of historical temple sites, that was established during the colonial era. More than half a million people from both countries have fled from areas hit by air strikes, tanks, and drones. The conflict has spread to five provinces in Thailand and five provinces in Cambodia.
In addition, as reported by Al Jazeera, citing The Khmer Times, Thai forces were suspected of launching a new attack in the early hours of Friday in three Cambodian provinces. Shots were fired in the areas of Ta Moan, Ta Kra Bei, and Thmar Daun in Oddar Meanchey Province, as well as artillery shelling in Phnom Khaing and An Ses in Preah Vihear. Attacks also occurred in Prey Chan and Boeung Trakuan in Banteay Meanchey.
There were no new casualties. However, the incident has caused at least 600,000 people to flee on both sides of the border after the collapse of the ceasefire mediated by U.S. President Donald Trump last October.
