TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Indonesian Minister of Foreign Affairs Sugiono met with the Ambassador of Italy to Indonesia, Roberto Colamin, on Friday, May 16, 2025. Their discussion centered on increasing Italian investment in strategic sectors within the archipelago, particularly renewable energy and electric vehicles.
"Indonesia is currently working to modernize its fishing fleet to strengthen food security and support sustainable maritime economic growth," Sugiono stated in a written statement today, May 17, 2025.
In addition to renewable energy and electric vehicles, Indonesia also extended an invitation to Italy to invest in its agricultural and infrastructure sectors.
During the meeting, Sugiono emphasized Indonesia's focus on accelerating green economic transformation, achieving technological independence, and strengthening strategic national industries. Cooperation with Italy is considered a crucial component in achieving these national targets.
Italy has demonstrated a strong interest in investing in Indonesia. As Indonesia's third-largest trading partner in Europe, the bilateral trade value between the two countries reached US$3.95 billion in 2024. Italy's investment in Indonesia in 2024 also saw an increase of 46 percent compared to the previous year, totaling US$70.5 million.
In addition to the economic sector, the meeting also addressed the strengthening of defense cooperation, which has become increasingly close in recent years, particularly concerning the procurement of defense equipment.
Sugiono underscored that future defense cooperation will not only prioritize procurement but also focus on technology transfer, joint production, and capacity building to support the independence of Indonesia's national defense industry.
