TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) allegedly attacked a Singapore-flagged cargo ship in the Strait of Hormuz, The Wall Street Journal reported Thursday, citing US officials and maritime personnel.
The Iranian Navy notably opened fire without transmitting any prior radio warnings to the vessels or ordering them to turn back, according to the report.
While no casualties were reported in the incident, the vessel's command bridge sustained damage, The Wall Street Journal noted.
On Tuesday, International Maritime Organization (IMO) Secretary-General Arsenio Dominguez announced the evacuation of thousands of seafarers from ships stranded in the Persian Gulf, where maritime traffic has been disrupted by the alleged attack.
Dominguez later clarified that the damaged vessel was not part of the fleet involved in the IMO's ongoing evacuation efforts, the report added.
US Energy Secretary Chris Wright stated on Wednesday that more than 70 vessels transporting approximately 20 million barrels of oil had successfully transited the Strait of Hormuz over the past 24 hours.
Just prior on June 18, Iran and the United States signed a memorandum of understanding that established a framework to conclude the hostilities that erupted on February 28.
The agreement also outlined a timeline for the US to dismantle its naval blockade of Iranian ports in exchange for Iran restoring safe passage through the critical Strait of Hormuz.
Furthermore, Tehran committed to abstaining from the acquisition of nuclear weapons, agreeing that the future of its nuclear program would be negotiated under a separate accord.
The US and Iran are slated to launch formal negotiations on the matter within 60 days, with the lifting of economic sanctions remaining a top priority for Tehran.
