TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - A 60-minute lights-out initiative held to commemorate World Ozone Day on Saturday, Sept. 19, 2026, reduced carbon emissions by 74.23 tons of COe in the Jakarta province, according to data from PLN UID Jakarta Raya.
"This one-hour initiative reminds us that environmental awareness can be put into practice through our daily habits," said Dudi Gardesi, Head of the Jakarta Environmental Agency, in a press statement on Sunday.
According to him, the simultaneous lights-out event on Saturday (Sept. 19) from 8:30 PM to 9:30 PM WIB (Western Indonesian Times) resulted in electricity savings of 92.79 megawatt-hours (MWh) and cost savings of Rp134,271,696, based on PLN's figures.
The electricity savings from the lights-out event on Saturday (Sept. 19) represented a 23.42 percent increase compared to a similar event held to commemorate World Environment Day on June 13, 2020, which yielded savings of 75.18 MWh.
Dudi stated that the energy savings and emission reductions achieved during the lights-out event could serve as encouragement to build sustainable energy-saving habits.
He noted that every citizen can contribute to energy conservation and carbon emission reduction by using electricity more wisely at home, at work, and at business premises.
"Turning off unnecessary lights and using electrical appliances only as needed are simple steps we can all take together. If done consistently, the benefits will continue to grow," he said.
Dudi expressed his appreciation to members of the public, building managers, business owners, and all parties who participated in the simultaneous lights-out event on Saturday, Sept. 19, 2026.
He hopes that their commitment to energy conservation and emission reduction will continue to grow and inspire more citizens to get involved. Residents are encouraged to utilize natural daylight, turn off lights in unoccupied rooms, and switch off air conditioning and electronic devices after use to conserve energy.
Building and business managers are encouraged to regulate electricity usage based on actual needs and operating hours, while still prioritizing comfort and safety.
