TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Jakarta Government sent assistance in the form of portable toilets to Aceh Tamiang, a regency in Aceh Province that was one of the worst-hit areas by floods and landslides at the end of last November.

The aid of portable toilets from the Jakarta Government was sent through the Environmental Agency. "Concern knows no distance, Jakarta is present for Sumatra," said the Head of the Jakarta Environmental Agency, Asep Kuswanto, in his statement on Thursday, December 18, 2025.

According to Asep, disasters can change the lives of people wherever they occur. All activities could be moved to evacuation centers. However, he stated, everyone still needs proper sanitation facilities. Therefore, the Jakarta government sent portable toilets to Aceh Tamiang.

Asep conveyed that portable toilets are not just about supporting facilities. Toilets are essential for maintaining the health of evacuees and supporting field personnel and volunteers in emergency conditions.

The Jakarta Environmental Agency sent at least 15 units of portable toilets to Aceh Tamiang. "This is part of the effort to prevent the risk of disease and maintain environmental cleanliness in disaster-affected areas," stated Asep.

Hydrometeorological disasters occurred in Aceh, North Sumatra, and West Sumatra at the end of last November. The National Disaster Management Agency (BNPB) recorded that more than a thousand people have died due to floods and landslides.

People in Aceh raised white flags along the Trans-Sumatra highway three weeks after the disaster that struck Sumatra. The flags were placed on wood posts along the connecting road between Aceh Tamiang Regency and the city of Langsa.

For the people of Aceh, the white flag is a symbol that they have surrendered to facing the handling of the Sumatra floods. "The white flag represents many things, as well as feelings of anger, frustration, hope, and a demand to be treated as citizens," said Muhammad Alkaf, a resident of Langsa, Aceh, when contacted on Tuesday, December 16, 2025.

Nauval Pally Taran, a 33-year-old volunteer who helped in the disaster response in Aceh, also viewed the white flag as a sign of surrender from the local community. According to him, people living in the worst-hit areas, such as Aceh Tamiang and North Aceh, are very overwhelmed by the disaster.

"As a volunteer who goes directly to the field, we truly feel the community's helplessness in facing and being able to overcome this difficult disaster situation," said Nauval.
