TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Chico Hakim, Special Staff to the Governor of Jakarta, urged the public to remain calm and not readily believe unverified information regarding volcanic ash exposure resulting from the eruption of Mount Anak Krakatau in Indonesia.
"We ask Jakarta residents to remain calm but vigilant. Follow official information from the BMKG, PVMBG, BPBD, and the Provincial Government. Do not easily trust unverified news. The health and safety of residents are our priority," Chico said in Jakarta on Sunday, September 6, 2026.
He stated that the Jakarta Provincial Government continues to monitor the development of Mount Anak Krakatau's activity in the Sunda Strait.
Based on data from the Geological Agency (ESDM), an eruption of Mount Anak Krakatau occurred again on Sunday, September 6, 2026, at 07:10 WIB (Western Indonesian Time).
The activity was recorded on a seismograph with a maximum amplitude of 50 mm and a duration of 16 seconds.
The volcano's status remains at Level III (Alert/Siaga). Potential threats, particularly around the crater, include lava flows that may be accompanied by the ejection of incandescent rocks.
The public and tourists are prohibited from entering the mountain area within a 3 km radius of the activity center.
A BMKG update at 09:03 WIB recorded eruption activity with a maximum amplitude of 19 mm and a duration of approximately 29 seconds.
No significant anomalies were found in BMKG seismograph recordings around the time of the event, and prior monitoring showed no significant rise in sea levels.
The volcanic ash dispersion zone was observed to be expanding, reaching Purbalingga Regency, Central Java, and extending into parts of the Jakarta area.
Consequently, Chico stated that the Jakarta Provincial Government urges residents to wear masks when leaving the house, reduce outdoor activities unless urgent, and close doors, windows, and ventilation to prevent ash from entering their homes.
Furthermore, residents are advised to wear protective eyewear to prevent eye irritation; if exposed to ash, they should rinse their eyes with clean water rather than rubbing them. They are also advised to cover food and beverages and to clean up ash using wet methods, avoiding dry sweeping. “Exercise caution while driving, as visibility is reduced and roads may be slippery. Seek medical attention immediately if you experience shortness of breath, severe eye irritation, or other health issues,” stated Chico.
Chico assured that the Jakarta Provincial Government is maintaining coordination with relevant agencies and will provide regular updates on the situation.
