TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Jakarta Provincial Government has decided to cancel the fireworks celebrations for the upcoming New Year's Eve in 2026. Governor of Jakarta Pramono Anung stated that the decision was made as a form of empathy towards the Sumatra disaster.
"I have thought that the most important thing is not excessive revelry, luxury, all that extravagance," Pramono said in the area of Ancol Barat on Friday, December 19, 2025.
However, he continued, as the capital city, Jakarta, will certainly be noticed by other countries in the upcoming New Year's Eve celebration.
Therefore, he said, the Jakarta provincial government has prepared an alternative celebration using drones as entertainment for the public.
"Certainly, we do not want to show excessive luxury and have no empathy for what is happening to our brothers and sisters in Sumatra," said Pramono.
The flash flood and landslide disaster have hit three provinces in Sumatra since November 25. The affected provinces include Aceh, North Sumatra, and West Sumatra.
The recapitulation conducted by the National Disaster Management Agency (BNPB) noted that there were 1,059 fatalities in the three provinces due to this disaster.
BNPB also estimates that an amount of Rp51.82 trillion is needed to rebuild Sumatra after the flood. With the situation in Sumatra still not fully recovered, Pramono stated that the Jakarta provincial government will also hold a joint prayer on the upcoming New Year's Eve.
"There will be a special place for reflection, prayer, contemplation, especially related to what happened in Sumatra."
