TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Indonesian Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) issued a tsunami early warning for several coastal areas in East Nusa Tenggara (NTT) and surrounding regions on Saturday, August 15, 2026, at 05:58 Central Indonesian Time (WITA). The warning was issued following a magnitude 7.7 earthquake that struck Mbay Village, Nagekeo Regency.
Arief Tyastama, Head of the Kupang Geophysics Station, stated on Saturday morning that the earthquake's epicenter was located at coordinates 8.41 degrees South latitude and 121.39 degrees East longitude. "The location was approximately 30 kilometers offshore from Mbay-Nagekeo at a depth of 15 kilometers," he said, as reported by Antara.
As of 07:03 WITA, the BMKG had issued two tsunami early warnings. The tsunami threat warnings covered the regions of East Nusa Tenggara, South Sulawesi, West Nusa Tenggara, and Southeast Sulawesi.
In East Nusa Tenggara, areas under "Alert" status include the northern parts of Manggarai, Ngada, West Manggarai, Ende, and Sikka. In South Sulawesi, the areas under "Alert" status are Selayar, Jeneponto, and Bantaeng.
