TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Indonesia's Minister of Transportation Dudy Purwagandhi stated that President Prabowo Subianto is continuously monitoring the impact of the Mount Anak Krakatau eruption on the transportation sector, particularly flight operations in several affected regions.
According to the Minister, the President frequently requests updates on flight conditions to serve as a basis for taking swift action to ensure the safety and smooth operation of air transport services.
"He is concerned; he asks for updates on our flight conditions almost constantly," the Minister confirmed in Jakarta on Sunday.
Dudy stated that the President has instructed all parties to anticipate any developments in the situation, noting that the spread of volcanic ash and weather conditions can change dynamically, thus requiring continuous monitoring.
"The President's instruction is clear: we must anticipate everything," the Minister said.
The Minister is personally monitoring the impact of the Mount Anak Krakatau eruption on flight operations from the monitoring center at Soekarno-Hatta International Airport in Tangerang, Banten.
Dudy explained that monitoring is being conducted via multiple screens displaying real-time data on volcanic ash dispersion and its impact on flight activities at various airports.
He stated that 1,558 flights have been affected by the closure of eight airports due to Mount Anak Krakatau volcanic ash, a measure taken to ensure operational safety.
The eight airports in question are Soekarno-Hatta Airport (Tangerang), Halim Perdanakusuma Airport (Jakarta), and Radin Inten II Airport (Lampung).
Also included are Husein Sastranegara Airport (Bandung), Budiarto Airport (Curug, Tangerang), Pondok Cabe Airport (South Tangerang), Taufik Kiemas Airport (West Pesisir, Lampung), and Atung Bungsu Airport (Pagar Alam, South Sumatra).
This impact encompasses both departures and arrivals, following the government's decision to extend the temporary closure of the eight airports until midnight (24:00 WIB). Based on the latest monitoring results, the movement of volcanic ash from Mount Anak Krakatau has shifted; the wind is now carrying the ash eastward at a speed of five knots at an altitude of 15,000 feet.
Given these conditions, the Ministry of Transportation—alongside the BMKG (Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency), AirNav, airport operators, and relevant stakeholders—continues to conduct periodic evaluations regarding the spread of the volcanic ash.
Earlier, President Prabowo Subianto urged the public—particularly those in Jakarta, Banten, Lampung, and the area surrounding the Sunda Strait—to remain calm and heighten their vigilance following the eruption activity at Mount Anak Krakatau.
In a statement issued in Jakarta on Sunday, the President asked the public to follow all directives from the government and field personnel, and to avoid approaching the Mount Anak Krakatau area.
The public is also urged to comply with the danger zones and safety limits established by the authorities.
"I call upon our fellow citizens in Jakarta, Banten, Lampung, and the area surrounding the Sunda Strait to remain calm, increase vigilance, and follow all directives from the government and field personnel; do not approach the Mount Anak Krakatau area, and fully adhere to the danger zones and safety limits established by the authorities," said President Prabowo.
The President stated that the government has been monitoring the activity of Mount Anak Krakatau and receiving reports and the latest information from relevant agencies.
He has also instructed the BNPB (National Agency for Disaster Countermeasure), BMKG, TNI (Indonesian National Armed Forces), Polri (Indonesian National Police), local governments, the Ministry of Health, the Ministry of Transportation, and other relevant ministries and agencies to continue monitoring the situation.
Furthermore, all government bodies have been directed to ensure effective preparedness and to provide necessary protection and assistance to the public.
