TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Mount Marapi in West Sumatra experienced another eruption on Sunday evening, December 14, 2025, at 16:37 Western Indonesia Time (WIB). The volcano spewed a column of volcanic ash up to 1,200 meters above its peak.
"The moderate-intensity ash is gray and drifted towards the north," Teguh Firmansyah, the Mount Marapi volcano monitoring officer, reported the event. He further noted that the eruption was recorded on the seismogram with a maximum amplitude of 9.8 mm and lasted for approximately 1 minute and 1 second.
"Currently, Mount Marapi retains its Level II status, or 'Alert'," he affirmed.
Teguh urged the public to strictly avoid the three-kilometer radius surrounding the center of activity, specifically the Verbeek Crater. He also cautioned residents living near valleys, riverbanks, or river channels originating from Mount Marapi to be wary of potential mudflows (lahars), a significant danger during the rainy season.
"If ash rain occurs, the public is strongly advised to use masks to cover the nose and mouth to prevent respiratory issues," Teguh added.
Mount Marapi is one of West Sumatra's most active volcanoes. Vulcanology officers maintain strict monitoring following the tragic December 2023 eruption that claimed the lives of several hikers.
In addition to Marapi, other Indonesian volcanoes recorded activity on Sunday. Mount Ibu, located in West Halmahera, North Maluku, experienced eruptions throughout the day and into the night, with one visually observed ash column reaching a height of approximately 500 meters.
Mount Semeru, on the border of Lumajang and Malang in East Java, also erupted today, though its ash column was not visually recorded.
