TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - French President Emmanuel Macron on Thursday said he had discussed efforts to halt the conflict with Pope Leo XIV, particularly to achieve lasting peace in Ukraine and Gaza.
"We discussed the efforts needed to silence weapons wherever conflicts are raging around the world, in particular to achieve a lasting and sustainable peace in Ukraine and Gaza," Macron wrote on the X platform as quoted by Anadolu.
He said this was his first telephone conversation with the new pope.
While congratulating the Pope, Macron said they have the same ambition to coordinate the fight against poverty and the protection of the planet.
The French President added that they will support anyone working for peace and international dialogue.
As reported by France24, although Macron did not join the world leaders who attended the inauguration mass of Pope Leo in Rome on Sunday morning, French Prime Minister Franois Bayrou will attend.
Cardinal Robert Prevost was elected as the new pope last week and took the name Leo XIV, the first pope in the history of the Catholic Church to be born in the United States.
Pope Leo XIV, as quoted by The Nation, used part of his first Sunday blessing from St. Peter's Basilica last Sunday to demand an immediate ceasefire in Gaza. The new Pope also called for Israel to stop the blockade of food, medicine, and other essential goods to the Palestinian enclave.
Three days after being chosen to lead the world's 1.4 billion Catholics, Pope Leo XIV reiterated his commitment to advocating for Gaza, a hallmark of Pope Francis's tenure. Francis passed away on April 21 at the age of 88.
Referring to the area where Israeli attacks have continued to kill more than 53,000 Palestinian civilians, most of whom are women and children, and destroy most of the civilian infrastructure, Pope Leo said, “I am deeply saddened by what is happening in the Gaza Strip: may there be an immediate ceasefire! Let humanitarian aid be provided to the stricken civil population and let all the hostages be freed.”
