
TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - President Prabowo Subianto and Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese have called for peace between Israel and Hamas amid the ongoing conflict in Gaza, Palestine. They also urged peaceful resolution between Ukraine and Russia.
On the Gaza situation, both leaders emphasized the need for all parties to maintain the ceasefire and secure the release of hostages. They stressed that Israel and Hamas must ensure the swift, safe, and sustainable delivery of humanitarian aid.
Additionally, Prabowo and Albanese urged all sides to uphold international humanitarian law and protect aid workers, while advocating for a two-state solution to resolve the conflict.
“The leaders reiterate their support for a two-state solution that will enable the people of Israel and Palestine to live peacefully within secure and recognized borders,” the joint statement said, according to an official release from the Indonesian Ministry of Foreign Affairs on Thursday, May 15, 2025.
Regarding the Ukraine war, the two leaders reaffirmed respect for sovereignty, political independence, and territorial integrity. They highlighted their commitment to international law and the United Nations Charter.
“The leaders underline the importance of resolving conflicts peacefully and that all prisoners of war must be released in accordance with international law,” the statement added.
Prabowo and Albanese also reiterated their support for ASEAN’s central role in the Indo-Pacific region and agreed on the importance of maintaining peace, stability, and prosperity.
They committed to working together to advance the practical implementation of ASEAN's Outlook on the Indo-Pacific, referencing the Special ASEAN-Australia Summit held in Melbourne in 2024, which marked the 50th anniversary of their relationship.
“The leaders welcome Quad’s support for ASEAN centrality, the ASEAN Outlook on the Indo-Pacific, and practical cooperation in the region,” the joint statement noted. The Quad is a security dialogue alliance including Australia, India, Japan, and the United States.
President Prabowo Subianto welcomed Prime Minister Anthony Albanese at the Merdeka Palace in Jakarta on Thursday, May 15, 2025. This visit is Albanese’s first official trip abroad following his re-election.
Albanese arrived at Halim Perdanakusuma Air Force Base in Jakarta on Wednesday evening, May 14, 2025, at 6:30 PM local time. The official visit is scheduled to last three days, from May 14 to 16, 2025.
Before this visit, President Prabowo congratulated Albanese on his re-election over a phone call on Sunday afternoon, May 4, 2025.
“Through a phone call this Sunday afternoon, President Prabowo Subianto directly conveyed his congratulations to the Honorable Anthony Albanese on his successful re-election as the Prime Minister of Australia,” stated a post on the official social media account of the Cabinet Secretariat, as quoted by Tempo on Monday, May 5, 2025.
During the call, Albanese told Prabowo that Indonesia would be his first destination following the Australian general election.
“I want to congratulate you on your great victory. I am very happy. I am very happy,” said Prabowo, as quoted in a video conversation released by the Presidential Palace on May 5, 2025.
