TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - At least two people were killed and 8 others injured in a shooting at Brown University in Rhode Island, United States on Saturday evening local time.
As reported by The Hill, the university initially stated that several people were shot and taken to the local hospital, and later confirmed at least two deaths. Providence Mayor Brett Smiley then told reporters that eight people were in critical condition.
"The FBI is on the scene," wrote President Donald Trump on Truth Social as quoted by New York Post, noting that he had been briefed on the situation.
"God bless the victims and the families of the victims!"
Commander Tim O'Hara of the Providence Police Department, Rhode Island, said that law enforcement officers are searching for a man dressed in black in connection with the shooting.
The university had previously stated that a suspect had been apprehended and later corrected its warning to students and staff to say that the suspect had not been captured, reported WCVB-TV, a Massachusetts-based news station. Trump also noted the change after previously sharing on Truth Social that a suspect had been apprehended.
Brown University warned students and campus staff about an active shooter near the Barus and Holley Engineering Building at 16:22 local time. Officials told reporters that final exams were taking place in the building during the afternoon.
"We have informed our community to shelter in place by locking doors, silence phones, and stay hidden until further notice," the university said in a warning at 18:05 local time.
"This remains an active crime scene, and law enforcement continues to search for the suspect, the situation is ongoing, and all members of the community should continue to shelter in place."
"It was honestly quite terrifying," said student Katie Sun to The Brown Daily Herald, the university newspaper. "The shots seemed like they were coming from … where the classrooms are."
