TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Watching movies at the cinema, singing karaoke, getting beauty treatments at a salon, doing Pilates, and swimming. Over the past year, those activities have become more than just a way to pass the time for Ria—a financial services employee in South Jakarta. They have become part of her monthly routine. “I have a schedule for everything,” said the 29-year-old single woman on Thursday, December 11, 2025. With a small laugh, she admitted the routine makes her days more structured and serves as “fuel” to endure work pressure.

Ria spends between Rp3 million and Rp5 million (about US$180-300) a month on leisure and entertainment. That figure does not include hanging out at cafés or dining at restaurants. She also sets aside time to travel, both domestically and overseas. Throughout 2025, she visited Lombok in West Nusa Tenggara, Bali, Belitung in Bangka Belitung, and Hong Kong. “I keep an eye on airfare and hotel promotions to get cheaper prices,” she said. When contacted by Tempo, Ria was on her way to Soekarno-Hatta International Airport in Tangerang, Banten, preparing to fly to Singapore. “I bought the ticket three months ago,” she added.

Ria is also a concertgoer. In February 2025, she watched Maroon 5, paying Rp2.25 million (US$135) for a ticket. In November, she attended a religious gathering by British preacher Nouman Ali Khan at the Velodrome in East Jakarta, with a ticket priced at Rp650,000 (US$40). “Only once in a while, if I like the performer,” she said.

Ria is one of millions of urban, middle-class people who now place entertainment, once considered a tertiary need, among their new primary needs. Amid the pressures of daily life, an uncertain economy, and the increasingly exhausting rhythm of city living, recreation has become a space to catch a breather.
