TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres stated on Wednesday, September 16, that the US-led Board of Peace would not replace the UN's role in the Gaza Strip.
"The Board of Peace is not replacing the UN," Guterres said during a press conference when asked to what extent the Peace Council would take over the UN's role in Gaza.
On October 9, 2025, Israel and the Palestinian resistance group Hamas agreed to implement the first phase of a peace plan proposed by US President Donald Trump.
The agreement was brokered by Egypt, Qatar, the United States, and Turkey.
The following day, a ceasefire went into effect in the Gaza Strip. Under the agreement, Israeli forces withdrew to the so-called "Yellow Line" but retained control over more than 50 percent of the Palestinian enclave.
In late July, the Board of Peace announced that Hamas had approved a roadmap for implementing the next phases of the ceasefire agreement in the Gaza Strip.
The plan included the gradual transfer of control of the Gaza Strip to the National Committee for the Administration of Gaza and the establishment of a special body to monitor violations by both Hamas and Israel.
But Guterres said the Peace Council faced the same obstruction as the UN, in which a recent push to advance the "phases one and two" of the peace plan was blocked by Israel, as quoted from Arab News.
Guterres is set to leave office by December 31, with a successor due to take office on January 1, 2027. The process was kicked off in November 2025 and currently involves eight candidates.
