TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The death toll from Venezuela's devastating twin earthquakes rose to 235 as of late Thursday, June 25, local time, Health Minister Carlos Alvarado announced.

"As of 7:00 p.m. today, we have already attended to more than 4,300 injured people, some minor, most minor, but there are also moderate and serious cases. Many of them have required surgical interventions," Alvarado said on state broadcaster VTV.

The health minister said that approximately 235 people were brought to hospitals "without vital signs" or "died upon arrival."

According to Alvarado, the most critical situation remains in the state of La Guaira, which recorded the highest number of deaths and injuries.

Alvarado explained that immediately after the earthquakes, the national emergency response mechanism was immediately activated. More than 5,000 medical personnel, including more than 1,200 doctors, were deployed to provide assistance in the worst-affected areas.

He added that not only government hospitals but also private clinics were participating in treating the victims. Currently, more than 150 patients are being treated at private health facilities, and many of those with minor injuries have been discharged.

Two powerful earthquakes, measuring 7.2 and 7.5 magnitudes, struck Venezuela on Wednesday, followed by 30 aftershocks. The disaster destroyed many homes, damaged infrastructure and hospitals, and shut down the country's main airport.
