TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Vietnam has advanced to the 2026 AFF Cup final after defeating Malaysia 2-0 in the second leg of the semifinals at My Dinh Stadium, Hanoi, on Wednesday, August 19, 2026.
Citing Antara, Vietnam defeated Malaysia thanks to two goals scored by striker Nguyen Xuan Son (62', 89').
This victory advanced Vietnam to the final with a 4-0 aggregate lead, having secured a 2-0 victory away to Malaysia in the first leg.
At My Dinh, Vietnam immediately took to offense, posing a threat through Phan Tuan Tai's shot that went wide of the Malaysian goal in the first minute.
Nguyen Dinh Bac then threatened with a shot in the ninth minute, but the ball went out of bounds.
Vietnam continued to pound the Malaysian defense, but their lack of clinical finishing prevented them from finding the net against Azri Ghani.
Throughout the remainder of the first half, Vietnam continued their attack, but the game remained goalless for both teams.
Entering the second half, Vietnam continued to demonstrate their dominance, launching several attacks on the Malaysian defense, but were still unable to score.
Malaysia briefly threatened with a left-footed shot from Pavithran, but the ball was saved by Vietnamese goalkeeper Le Giang Patrik in the 53rd minute.
Vietnam finally broke the deadlock in the 62nd minute through a shot from Nguyen Xuan Son, making it 1-0.
Both teams traded attacks, but neither Vietnam nor Malaysia was able to find the back of the net.
Vietnam doubled their lead in the 89th minute with a second goal from Nguyen Xuan Son after receiving a pass from Nguyen Dinh Bac, making it 2-0.
For the remainder of the second half, Malaysia created more chances to catch up but the score remained 2-0 for Vietnam.
Vietnam will next face Thailand in the 2026 AFF Cup final, which will take place over two legs on August 22 and 26, 2026.
