TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Horror directors Ryan Murphy and Ian Brennan are ready for another installment of their hit anthology series with Monster: The Lizzie Borden Story. This season will premiere on Netlix on September 17, 2026, with eight episodes set for release.
The story mainly follows Lizzie Borden, the woman from Masachussets who was accused of killing her parents with an axe in 1892.
Citing Netflix, this season of Monster tells the story of a "represed daughter of a wealthy New England family" and how "one young woman changed what the world believed a killer could be."
But while the focus of the story is on Borden, the trailer unveils an interesting twist. Sarah Paulson appeared right at the end, interjecting a voice that says "No one really knows what happened that day."
"Oh, I f---ing know what happened," Paulson's character, Aileen Wuornos said in return.
Aileen Wuornos was a real-life woman who largely hailed as "the first female serial killer." She was convicted of six murders committed between 1989 and 1990, according to People, and she died by lethal injection on October 9, 2002.
Paulson's reveal brought confusion to some, as Borden's story took place decades before Wuorno's crimes. Ella Beatty, the 26-year-old actress who plays Borden, explained Wuorno's role in the series.
“The show is exploring a legacy of female rage and reaction to the set of circumstances that they are presented with,” Beatty said, as quoted from Entertainment Weekly, citing Netflix's Tudum.“I think there’s a connection [between Borden and Wuornos] that Ryan and Ian were interested in mapping and exploring.”
According to Netflix, Wuornos' inclusion is a “crucial part in the thematic focus" of the latest season of Monster. “Every season of Monster has been an exercise in understanding the person’s psychology,” Beatty told Tudum.
“Are they born or are they made? I knew from the beginning that Ryan Murphy and Ian Brennan were really interested in exploring what brings a woman to the point of violence. ... I think the story of Aileen Wuornos also served that question and that exploration of why women kill.”
The previous seasons of Monster chronicled real-life serieal murderers Jeffry Dahmer, Ed Gein, and the Menendez Brothers. Borden's story would be the first time Murphy and Brennan take on a woman-centered story.
The new installment also stars Vicky Krieps as the maid, Bridget Sullivan; Charlie Hunnam as Lizzie’s father, Andrew Borden; Rebecca Hall as her stepmother, Abby Borden; Billie Lourd as her older sister, Emma; and Jessica Barden as her friend, Nance O’Neil.
