TEMPO.CO, Jakarta – Nearly 1,000 air guns and a firearm were discovered hidden inside a locked room at a school in Kebayoran Lama, South Jakarta.

School representative Untung said the school found a total of 995 weapons in a room belonging to the school's former foundation chairman, who had since been dismissed.

“We found them in the room of the former foundation chairman, whom we had dismissed,” Untung said on Thursday, August 6, 2026.

How Were the Weapons Discovered?

Untung said the room had previously been accessible only to the former foundation chairperson and his associates.

He said the former foundation chairperson had built what the school described as a bunker inside the school, with a rear entrance reportedly used to move goods in and out.

The cache was discovered after the school's new management sought to use one of the rooms. When they opened it, they found hundreds of weapons stored inside several boxes.

School officials subsequently inspected other rooms and found additional weapons in spaces belonging to the former foundation chairman.

“We also found ammunition and equipment for making ammunition,” Untung said.

He added that the school suspected other rooms could also have been used to store weapons because the keys to those rooms had reportedly been taken by the former foundation officials.

Police Secure Weapons

The South Jakarta Police received a report about the weapons on July 15, 2026. “The weapons consisted of firearms and air guns stored in one of the rooms belonging to the school foundation,” South Jakarta Police spokesperson First Inspector Joko Adiwibowo told Tempo.

The hundreds of air guns have since been transferred to the Weapons and Explosives Supervisory Unit (Wassendak) at the Jakarta Metropolitan Police. One firearm is being kept at South Jakarta Police headquarters.

Authorities have not disclosed further details about the firearm or whether anyone has been charged in connection with the discovery.

Who Owned the Weapons?

The school's former foundation management was previously known to be affiliated with PT Lokta Karya Perbakin, a company involved in selling firearms for shooting sports.

PT Lokta Karya Perbakin President Director Alhadid Endar Putra claimed that all of the weapons were legally licensed.

“There is no rule prohibiting us from storing them in a particular place. What matters is that there is CCTV, the weapons are locked up, and they are not explosives,” Alhadid said.

The discovery has prompted questions over the storage of hundreds of weapons on school grounds, although the company has maintained that the weapons were properly licensed.
