Bantargebang Landfill Landslide Death Toll Rises to Five

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta A joint search and rescue team found another victim in the landslide at the Bantargebang Integrated Waste Processing Site (TPST) in Bekasi City, Indonesia, on Monday, March 9, 2026. This discovery brings the death toll to five.

Desiana Kartika Bahari, Head of the Jakarta SAR Office, stated that the team found the victim at around 12:05 p.m. Western Indonesian Time (WIB). "At around 12:05 p.m. Western Indonesian Time (WIB), the team found another victim in a deceased condition," Desiana said on Monday.

Desiana explained that officers had not yet been able to confirm the identity of the newly discovered victim. The SAR team then evacuated the body to the Kramat Jati National Police Hospital for identification. "The body was immediately taken to the Kramat Jati National Police Hospital for identification," she said.

With this discovery, the death toll from the landslide at the Bantargebang TPST on Sunday, March 8, 2026, has now reached five. The four victims who have been identified are Enda Widayanti (25 years old), Sumine (60 years old), Dedi Sutrisno, and Irwan Suprihatin (42 years old). Meanwhile, the identity of one other body remains unknown.

Eko Budi Santoso, a rescue officer from the Bekasi City Fire and Rescue Department (Disdamkarmat), said the landslide occurred while trucks were queuing to dump garbage at around 2:30 p.m. Western Indonesian Time (WIB).

In addition to crushing the trucks and drivers, the landslide also hit a food stall located near the mountain of garbage. Eko explained that the landslide buried three trucks. Officers have evacuated two trucks from the scene. "We are still searching for several people," he said.
