TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Indonesian Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) recorded 97 earthquakes in West Java during January 2026. The majority of the quakes, 80 of which occurred at shallow depths, less than 60 kilometers.

Teguh Rahayu, Head of the BMKG Bandung Geophysical Station, stated that 16 other earthquakes were classified as medium-depth earthquakes, with depths ranging from 60 to 300 kilometers. One earthquake occurred at a depth of up to 319 kilometers. "Regarding magnitude, the largest earthquake recorded was 3.8 and the smallest 1.3," he said in a written statement on Sunday, February 1, 2026.

The earthquakes in West Java and its surrounding areas during January 2026 were mostly centered in the southern Java Sea, with 62 occurring. Another 35 earthquakes occurred on land. However, according to Rahayu, only two of these earthquakes were felt by the public.

The earthquake on Friday, January 30, 2026, at 5:13 a.m. Western Indonesian Time (WIB), with a magnitude of 2.7, was felt by residents in the areas of Sukasari, Tanjungsari, Cileunyi, Cilengkrang, Cimenyan, Lembang, and Ujungberung. The shallow earthquake, at a depth of 5 kilometers, was centered at coordinates 6.87 degrees South Latitude and 107.75 degrees East Longitude.

Daryono, Director of Earthquakes and Tsunami at the Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG), stated that the source of the earthquake was not the Lembang Fault. "It wasn't the Lembang Fault, but another fault further east of the Lembang Fault," he said Friday morning.

Located approximately 19 kilometers west of the center of Sumedang Regency, the earthquake was felt at an intensity of II-III on the MMI scale. Some residents felt the tremors, causing light hanging objects to sway, and even felt like a truck was passing inside their homes.

Another earthquake felt in West Java was the earthquake in Bekasi and its surrounding areas on Monday, January 26, 2026, with a magnitude of 2.7. The epicenter was located at coordinates 6.38 degrees South Latitude and 107.17 degrees East Longitude. "It was located on land, 2 kilometers south of the center of Bekasi Regency," said Hartanto, Head of BMKG Region II, in a written statement on Monday, January 26, 2026.

The earthquake was relatively shallow, with a depth of 7 kilometers. According to Hartanto, the quake was caused by active fault activity. Residents felt the tremor in the Cikarang and Karawang areas, with an intensity of II-III on the MMI scale. This means the tremor was felt by only a few people and caused hanging objects to sway, and inside homes it felt as if a truck was passing by.
