TEMPO.CO, Jakarta Colombian President Abelardo de la Espriella has pledged to begin deporting undocumented migrants as part of a broader security policy. Police operations will begin no later than this week, he said at a security council meeting over the weekend.

"The order to Immigration is clear: begin coordinated operations to track down illegal immigrants: first, those who are committing crimes, and second, those whose immigration status is not in order. Ultimately, they will have to be deported," he said in a statement released on Monday, August 24, citing ANTARA. He stressed that armed rebel groups would be treated as terrorists.

De la Espriella said his government would soon establish a national task force to tackle extortion, involving the army, police, navy and air force in coordination with the Attorney General's Office and the judiciary.

The president ordered a crackdown on extortion in prisons. This includes increasing raids, expanding the network of informants, speeding up prisoner transfers, and implementing a reward system for good behavior.

De la Espriella was sworn in earlier this month and promised to create an elite unit of prosecutors and specialized judges in each city. He also promised to reactivate the Financial Information and Analysis Unit, an intelligence agency that will have access to banking records from the last four years of Gustavo Petro's administration.
