TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives (DPR) Sufmi Dasco Ahmad welcomes the upcoming student protest centralized at the parliament complex tomorrow, Friday, June 19. According to him, DPR leaders plan to meet and hold an audience with the student representatives.
"Tomorrow there is indeed a plan for the DPR leaders to receive [the student protesters]," said the Gerindra Party politician at the DPR building, Jakarta, on Thursday, June 18.
Dasco, however, has yet to disclose when the meeting will take place and which students will be hosted.
Several student executive boards from various faculties of Trisakti University will stage a protest at the DPR on Friday. The call for action was uploaded through each faculty's social media accounts, such as BEM FH Trisakti and BEM STMA Trisakti.
The protest is scheduled to take place at 01:30, raising three main demands: economic and political restoration, weeding out incompetent state officials, and bringing back civil supremacy.
"The BEM FH University of Trisakti invites all students and the general public to attend and voice their aspirations," the caption read on the post of @bem.fh.trisaksi.
According to the Trisakti student alliance, the protest serves as public oversight over state policies and ensures the upholding of democratic values.
A wave of student demonstrations and civil society coalitions has begun since last week, triggered by the weakening of the rupiah exchange rate against the US dollar. Students from various regions in Indonesia demand that the government reduce the prices of basic commodities and fuel and stop programs that strongly indicate wasteful spending, such as free nutritious meals.
