TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Bhutan Department of Tourism has introduced five wellness and recovery experiences, combining nature, tradition, and spirituality, as options for travelers seeking to restore their physical and mental health in the Himalayan Kingdom.
"Amid spectacular landscapes and serene atmosphere, Bhutan offers unique opportunities for travellers to reconnect with themselves. Bhutan is a sanctuary for those seeking an escape from life’s stresses and find spiritual calm," said Damcho Rinzin, Director of the Bhutan Department of Tourism, in a statement on Saturday, June 20.
The Bhutan Department of Tourism explained that the first experience offered is yoga and meditation amid the Himalayan mountain landscape. Tourists can participate in outdoor yoga sessions or inside traditional temples, complementing the experience with meditation sessions available at several hotels, including Zhiwa Ling Heritage in Paro.
Next, visitors can journey to historic monasteries like Punakha Dzong, known as the "Palace of Happiness," and Gangtey Monastery in the Phobjikha Valley, which offer a serene setting for meditation and self-reflection.
Bhutan also offers healing experiences through traditional hot stone baths, or menchu. This therapy uses heated river stones to release minerals into the water, combined with wormwood leaves as part of traditional Bhutanese healing practices.
For nature lovers, Bhutan offers trekking trails spanning the Himalayas, including the 403-kilometer Trans Bhutan Trail and the Snowman Trek, known as one of the most challenging treks in the world.
Furthermore, tourists can learn about traditional Bhutanese medicine, or sowa rigpa, through consultations with traditional medicine doctors in Thimphu or through wellness programs offered by several resorts, such as the Bhutan Spirit Sanctuary.
The Bhutan Department of Tourism states that the country's tourism approach prioritizes high-value, low-volume tourism to preserve Bhutan's culture, environment, and identity while providing a higher-quality experience for tourists.
