TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - For 24 hours after a magnitude 7.7 earthquake struck East Nusa Tenggara (NTT) on Saturday, August 15, 2026, hundreds of residents of Satar Kampas village in East Manggarai Regency lay injured at the village's refugee response coordination post. The only health workers living there were Andri Rizal and his wife. Andri is a nurse, while his wife is a doctor.
Andri said that in the first hours after the quake, residents of Satar Kampas streamed into the coordination post with a range of medical conditions. Most had been injured by falling debris. "We were overwhelmed because patients kept coming from morning until afternoon," he said on Friday, August 21.
With patients flooding in and aid failing to arrive, Andri and his wife ran out of medical supplies to treat residents of Satar Kampas village. At one point, Andri tried to reenter his damaged house amid aftershocks. He had been running a small pharmacy from his home.
He took whatever medicines remained to treat earthquake victims. But even Andri's supplies were insufficient to meet the medical needs of evacuees at the coordination post. He had to improvise.
