TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) stated that there was no disruption to Japan's nuclear facilities following a powerful earthquake and tsunami warning on Monday, April 20, 2026.

In a post on X social media platform, the nuclear technology agency stated that it was "informed by Japan that as of 8:16 UTC no abnormalities occurred at its nuclear facilities in the affected regions" following the magnitude-7.7 earthquake and tsunami warning.

Meanwhile, Japanese Chief Cabinet Secretary Minoru Kihara also confirmed that there was no emergency situation at the nuclear power plant (NPP) or other nuclear facilities due to the earthquake and potential tsunami.

"We have not received reports that there have been any emergencies at nuclear facilities near the epicenter due to the earthquake or tsunami," Kihara told reporters.

The Japan Meteorological Agency reported that the earthquake struck northeastern Honshu Island on Monday, specifically around Aomori and Iwate Prefectures.

The magnitude of the earthquake was later updated from 7.5 to 7.7, and the depth was revised from 10 kilometers to 18 kilometers.

NHK reported that a tsunami was detected at sea and was moving towards the coastal areas of Aomori and Iwate.

Japan Today reported that approximately 40 minutes after the initial shock, a tsunami wave measuring 80 centimeters was reported to have reached the port in Kuji City, Iwate Prefecture.
