TEMPO.CO, Jakarta The Indonesian government officially expressed its condolences to the Norwegian government and people on the passing of King Harald V on August 28.

The Indonesian Minister of Foreign Affairs, Sugiono, expressed his condolences in a written statement in the condolence book at the Norwegian Embassy in Jakarta on Tuesday, September 1.

"On behalf of the Government and People of Indonesia, I extend my heartfelt condolences to the Royal Family, the Government, and the People of Norway," said Sugiono in his condolences, as posted on social media X on Wednesday, as quoted by ANTARA.

The minister said that King Harald V will always be remembered for his leadership, warmth, dedication, and humility, especially during his service as Norway's head of state. “His Late Majesty King Harald V will be remembered for his leadership, warmth, dedication, and humility. May His Late Majesty rest in peace,” he added.

Sugiono's presence to convey his condolences reflects the respect of the Indonesian people and government for the passing of King Harald V, as well as reflecting the close friendship between Indonesia and Norway.

Sugiono's arrival at the Norwegian Embassy to sign the condolence book was welcomed by the Deputy Norwegian Ambassador to Indonesia, Christian Groseth.

King Harald V died on August 28, at the age of 89, after undergoing medical treatment at the National Hospital in Oslo since August 17, according to a royal announcement.

The royal family said Harald had been receiving cortisone treatment for hemolytic anemia, a blood disease that causes fluid buildup in the body. His health worsened after he developed a bacterial infection in his bloodstream, according to national broadcaster NRK.

Following Harald's death, Crown Prince Haakon immediately became Norway's new head of state as King Haakon VIII, as stipulated in the country's constitution.

On September 1, King Haakon VIII swore his allegiance to the Norwegian Constitution in a ceremony in the Norwegian Parliament.
