TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Peru on Tuesday, September 1, declared a 60-day state of emergency in 893 districts across 23 regions, following imminent risks posed by heavy rains associated with the 2026–2027 El Nino.
As reported by ANTARA, the measure was established through a supreme decree published in the official gazette El Peruano to prevent and mitigate the "very high risk" posed by extreme rainfall in the coming months.
Regional governments in Peru will implement intervention plans under the technical coordination and monitoring of the National Institute of Civil Defense, with support from relevant ministries and public and private institutions.
The decree states that the measures must be directly related to climate threats and may be adjusted during implementation in accordance with safety requirements and technical reports.
The government stated that the decision was made based on a situation report warning that local governments' capacity to handle the situation was inadequate, thereby necessitating operational and technical support at the national level.
