Jakarta Eid Exodus Predicted to Peak on March 16-18

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The homecoming season for the 2026 Eid al-Fitr holiday is fast approaching, with Jakarta expected to be the nation’s second-largest point of departure for travelers. Commissioner General Komarudin, Director of Traffic for the Jakarta Metro Police, predicts that the peak period for travelers leaving the capital will begin on March 16, 2026. "Until March 18," Komarudin stated on Monday, March 9, 2026.

He urged the public to avoid traveling during these dates whenever possible to prevent becoming trapped in severe traffic congestion. "So it doesn't coincide with the peak period," he told reporters.

Police are also readying a series of anticipatory measures to mitigate gridlock during the peak travel window, including operational restrictions on large vehicles. "We will definitely limit it on those dates," Komarudin confirmed.

Previously, National Police Chief General Listyo Sigit Prabowo predicted that the 2026 Eid homecoming traffic would occur in two distinct waves. "The first homecoming traffic is likely to occur from March 14 to 15," Sigit noted during a coordination meeting for Operation Ketupat 2026 on Monday, March 2, 2026.

Meanwhile, the second peak period for homecoming traffic is forecast for March 18 and 19, 2026. The return flow of travelers is also expected to arrive in two waves, specifically on March 24–25 and March 28–29.

The National Police have prepared several traffic engineering schemes to manage the flow during the 2026 holiday season. Prepared measures include one-way systems, contraflow lanes, rest area management, and restrictions on three-axle heavy vehicles.

Sigit maintains that traffic engineering remains an effective strategy for easing congestion caused by the surge in vehicle volume. "Issuing advisories, waiving fines, implementing delay systems at crossing points, and diverting traffic are the engineering measures we will execute," Sigit concluded.
