TEMPO.COJakarta - The Jakarta Provincial Government has outlined several solutions to ease the burden on the Bantargebang Integrated Waste Processing Site (TPST) in Bekasi, one of which is reducing waste at the source.

Head of the Jakarta Environmental Agency, Asep Kuswanto, stated that the more waste that can be sorted and reduced, from households, offices, and residential areas, the less pressure the Bantargebang TPST, as the final processing site, will have to bear.

"Efforts to reduce waste at the source are an important part of Jakarta's long-term waste management strategy, as well as reducing the burden of landfills entering the final processing site each day," Asep said in a statement in Jakarta on Wednesday.

Reducing waste at the source can be achieved through simple steps that the public can implement, namely sorting waste into biodegradable, recyclable materials, residue, and household hazardous and toxic waste.

Furthermore, the public is encouraged to compost food waste and reuse items that still have a use.

"These measures have proven effective in reducing the volume of waste that must be transported to processing facilities and final processing sites," said Asep.

He explained that the Jakarta Provincial Government continues to strengthen its waste management system from upstream to downstream, one of which is through the development of modern processing facilities, such as the Rorotan Refuse Derived Fuel (RDF) Plant, which processes waste into alternative fuel for the cement industry.

However, Asep emphasized that processing technology alone is not enough without the support of active community participation in reducing waste at the source.

Therefore, the Jakarta Provincial Government encourages all residents to develop a culture of waste sorting and reduction in their daily lives.

"If the public becomes more active in sorting and reducing waste, Jakarta's waste management system will become more sustainable, and the burden on Bantargebang TPST can continue to be reduced because only residual waste is sent there," Asep said.

The Bantargebang landfill is recorded as receiving an average of 7,354 tons of waste per day from the DKI Jakarta area, while the total daily load of the waste processing site reaches 7,734 tons of waste.
