LPEI Suggests Exporters Engage Indonesian Diaspora in Australia

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Indonesian Export Financing Agency (LPEI) suggests that export-oriented businesses engage the Indonesian diaspora in Australia, as they are deemed to have a better understanding of the country's market conditions and drive Indonesian exports value.

"The growing Indonesian community and diaspora in Australia become a natural promotional catalyst in the Australian retail and online markets," said LPEI member Fikrie Aldjoeffry in a written statement on Saturday, May 10, 2025.

Trade Attaché in Canberra, Agung Haris Setiawan, stated that the total trade value between Australia and Indonesia reached US$13.474 billion, with Indonesia's exports to Australia reaching US$5.59 billion.

Haris, as he is called, revealed that food and beverage products are one of the leading export potentials in Australia, amounting to US$160.5 million in 2024. Haris suggests that food and beverage exporters keep up with the trend in Australia to bolster trade.

The key, according to Haris, is to market low-sugar and plant-based products that meet the Food Standards Australia New Zealand (FSANZ). "The products marketed should also have a strong story, use quality ingredients, and have cultural and sustainable value," said Haris.

Indonesia also has a great opportunity to export cooking spices, as Australia is reportedly looking for natural cooking spices without synthetic additives that are easy to use. "Global culinary and ethnic trends are driving the demand for authentic spices, and Indonesia has a great opportunity in this market."

Additionally, Haris stated that home decorations made from rattan in Indonesia are also favored by Australian people. Haris stated that the export trend of Indonesian home decorations from 2018 to 2022 increased by 13.98 percent, while the export of furniture products was up by 11.67 percent during the same period.

To attract the Australian market, Haris suggests that home decoration products be made with minimalist designs in neutral colors to suit interior designs. "Unique personal or handmade touches can also reflect personality and integration with smart devices to facilitate daily home management," he said.

In addition to rattan, bamboo-based home decorations are also growing in popularity in the Australian market.  "Indonesian bamboo products are known for their handmade touch, artistic design, and strong cultural value, creating an emotional appeal that is difficult to compete with mass-produced products," he said.
