TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - An updated 6.2 magnitude earthquake struck Pacitan, East Java, at around 1:00 a.m. Friday, February 6, 2026, according to the Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG).

The offshore earthquake's epicenter is located at coordinates 8.98 S and 111.18 E, 89 kilometers southeast of the city of Pacitan, East Java, at a depth of 58 kilometers.

"The earthquake was shallow and occurred due to subduction plate activity," said the Director of the Earthquake and Tsunami Center at BMKG, Daryono, in a statement on Friday. "The source mechanism analysis results indicate that the earthquake has a thrust fault mechanism."

Daryono stated that the Pacitan tremor is a type of megathrust earthquake, as indicated by its thrusting movement at a shallow depth. "Fortunately, the Pacitan earthquake did not reach a magnitude of 7.0, as it could potentially trigger a tsunami," he added.

BMKG, based on resident reports, mentioned that several houses were damaged in the shaking. "One house collapsed in Ploso Village, Pacitan District," stated BMKG, citing a report from Bolo, a volunteer in Pacitan. Additionally, one roof in the Jatisrono District, Wonogiri Regency, Central Java, collapsed.

This earthquake was felt in the Bantul, Sleman, and Pacitan regions with an intensity scale of IV MMI, meaning it was felt indoors by many people during the daytime.

In the Kulon Progo, Trenggalek, Wonogiri, Malang, Cirebon, Blitar, Surakarta, Karanganyar, Magelang, Jombang, Tulungagung, Ponorogo, Magetan, Nganjuk, Wonosobo, and Banjarnegara areas, it was felt with an intensity scale of III MMI, with vibrations akin to a truck passing by.

Weaker vibrations were felt at II MMI in Tuban and Jepara. Modeling shows that this earthquake does not pose a tsunami threat.
