TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Microsoft has officially inaugurated Indonesia Central, the country's first cloud region project, affirming its commitment to strengthening innovation for developers, organizations, and government institutions. Scott Guthrie, Executive Vice President of Microsoft's Cloud + AI Group, stated that this local data center will support digital transformation and AI development.
"It is an honor to be here and officially announce the opening of the Indonesia Central Cloud Region," Guthrie said during the Microsoft AI Tour event in Jakarta on Tuesday, May 27, 2025.
While Microsoft confirmed the Indonesia Central server's location is in West Java, the exact site was not disclosed. A project launch video merely showcased the area where the American company's regional data center is constructed. Guthrie emphasized that this infrastructure is a crucial component of the Microsoft Cloud Azure Region, calling it "more than a milestone."
According to Microsoft's official statement, this cloud region offers superior local data storage capabilities, providing high-level security standards and lower latency.
The establishment of this cloud region underscores Microsoft's commitment to invest US$1.7 billion in Indonesia between 2024 and 2028. This funding is primarily directed towards the cloud sector and AI development.
Minister of Communication and Digital, Meutya Hafid, expressed optimism that Microsoft's investment will contribute an economic impact of US$2.5 billion or approximately Rp41 trillion over the next four years. This investment is also projected to generate 60,000 job opportunities by 2028.
"Indonesia is currently in a strategic position to strengthen its role as a digital economic center in the Asia Pacific," Meutya remarked at the event.
