TEMPO.CO, Jakarta Mount Anak Krakatau spewed incandescent lava 200 meters above the summit Saturday night, at 08:07 p.m. local time, an eruption that differed from recent ash ejections.

According to the Heruningtyas Desi Purnamasari, the head of the Volcano Working Team at the Center for Volcanology and Geological Hazard Mitigation (PVMBG), the latest eruption of Mount Anak Krakatau is classified as strombolian, which sees a weak explosive eruption.

She told Tempo on Saturday night, August 22, 2026, that this type of eruption typically ejects incandescent lava, volcanic gas, and pyroclastic material.

Mount Anak Krakatau is an active type A volcano located in the Sunda Strait waters and administratively part of the South Lampung Regency, Lampung Province. Since early June, its volcanic activity has picked up, characterized by the emission of sulfur dioxide gas, followed by heat anomalies and the appearance of hotspots around the crater, as well as increased shallow earthquakes, especially tremors, hybrid/many phases, and low frequency.

The latest monitoring results show that the activity of Mount Anak Krakatau remains relatively high and fluctuating. The seismicity is dominated by 106 hybrid  earthquakes, 75 harmonic earthquakes, 39 continuous tremors, 28 low-frequency earthquakes, and 23 emission earthquakes, as well as recording two eruption earthquakes.

Visually, the eruption activity is still frequently observed with thick smoke from the crater. "This indicates that the process of releasing volcanic gas from the active crater is still ongoing intensively," said the Head of the Geological Agency, Lana Saria, in her statement on Saturday.

Similarly on Saturday, at exactly 03:13 p.m. local time, Mount Anak Krakatau experienced another eruption, with the observed ash column reaching about 400 meters above the summit or approximately 557 meters above sea level. The ash column appeared gray to black in color with thick intensity and leaned towards the southwest.

According to Lana, this shows that the volcanic system of Mount Anak Krakatau remains active with a high chance of more eruptions.

Mount Anak Krakatau's volcanic activity is currently at alert Level III, with residents and tourists alike advised to avoid activities within a 3-kilometer radius from the active crater.

The coastal communities in Banten and Lampung are also cautioned to avoid believing unconfirmed rumors about Mount Anak Krakatau eruptions that could trigger a tsunami. They are advised to continue their activities as usual while complying with the instructions of the local disaster management agencies.
