TEMPO.CO, Jakarta – Social Affairs Minister Saifullah Yusuf said the government has allocated funds to assist victims of the 7.7-magnitude earthquake that struck Indonesia's East Nusa Tenggara (NTT).
Saifullah, popularly known as Gus Ipul, said 199 people who have been recorded as injured in the earthquake will each receive Rp5 million (arounf $300) in assistance.
“Each will receive Rp5 million, totaling more than Rp900 million,” Gus Ipul told reporters at the Social Affairs Ministry office in Salemba, Central Jakarta, on Tuesday, August 18, 2026.
Families who lost relatives in the disaster will also receive Rp15 million in compensation. As of August 18, the earthquake had killed 70 people.
“We will provide compensation to the heirs of the 70 people who died, with each family receiving Rp15 million,” Gus Ipul said.
In addition to cash assistance, the Social Affairs Ministry has distributed 48 tons of rice, worth around Rp600 million, to several affected areas in NTT. It has also provided 7,500 basic-needs packages worth approximately Rp2 billion.
“We have also provided evacuation equipment and established public kitchens at seven locations. So, there are seven public kitchens operating,” he said.
According to the ministry's data as of August 18, the earthquake damaged 12,153 houses. Of these, 6,578 were heavily damaged, 1,660 moderately damaged and 3,915 lightly damaged.
The disaster also affected 264 educational facilities and 83 health facilities, including nine hospitals and 74 community health centers.
“One Bulog warehouse was also affected,” Gus Ipul said, referring to Indonesia's state-owned food logistics agency.
The earthquake also damaged around 116 public facilities, five bridges, one market, 157 places of worship, 171 government and office buildings, seven irrigation facilities and 34 other buildings.
