Prabowo Wants Reform of All State Institutions, Not Only Police

4 hours ago 3

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Member of the Indonesia's Police Reform Acceleration Commission, Ahmad Dofiri, said President Prabowo Subianto wants improvements across all state institutions, not only the police force. He said the president conveyed this during a meeting at the State Palace, Jakarta, on Tuesday, May 5, 2026.

Dofiri explained that Prabowo sees the need for reform across government institutions, although the police force is being prioritized as it is at the forefront of law enforcement and has faced public scrutiny.

“Therefore, the President conveyed: ‘Alright, let’s start with the police force,’” Dofiri quoted Prabowo as saying during a press conference in South Jakarta on Wednesday, May 6, 2026.

He added that Prabowo, in his capacity as Presidential Special Advisor on Security and Public Order and Police Reform, also highlighted several strategic concerns, including food security, energy, water, and efforts to combat corruption and state revenue leakage.

“This is why it is important to focus on the police force as law enforcers, because it is linked to these matters,” he said.

At the same meeting, the Police Reform Acceleration Commission submitted a final report containing six key recommendations to improve the police institution.

Commission chair Jimly Asshiddiqie said the document includes a wide range of policy reform options for both the government and the police.

“We reported a total of ten books, covering overall policy reform and policy alternatives to be implemented by the government and the police,” he said after meeting Prabowo.

One of the key recommendations approved by the president is to keep the police force directly under the president, rather than placing it under a ministry. The commission also concluded that subordinating the police to a ministry would bring more negative than positive effects.

Coordinating Minister for Legal, Human Rights, Immigration, and Law Yusril Ihza Mahendra, who is also a commission member, said the government will not establish a new ministry for the police, nor place the force under an existing ministry such as the Ministry of Home Affairs.
