TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Reddit is testing audio and video content that allows users to enjoy posts in a TikTok-style format.
As reported by Tech Crunch on Monday, the test was conducted in several Reddit communities, involving posts in both video and audio formats. The trial was run to determine which types of content users were most interested in and could potentially expand the feature.
With this new feature, users will be able to choose to view posts in their usual text format or play the audio or video version, if available.
The concept emerged after Reddit saw many popular posts on its platform being turned into videos by other social media users.
Reddit content is often read aloud using text-to-speech technology or delivered live by content creators, then combined with on-screen text or other videos such as gameplay and cooking activities.
Reddit CEO Steve Huffman believes that Reddit's audio and visual content formats are more engaging for users.
“There is an emerging content type elsewhere on the internet of, basically, podcasts where people read Reddit content. I think this version of, like, listened-to or spoken Reddit can be really engaging, as well," he said.
The initial testing of this feature is only available for a limited number of English-language posts and can be accessed through the Reddit app on iOS and Android devices.
Despite introducing a new format, Reddit ensures that the original text posts will not be replaced. Users can still read posts and comments and interact as usual.
Reddit sees the audio format as useful for users who want to enjoy content while doing other activities, such as walking, exercising, or taking care of daily needs. Meanwhile, video and audio formats can be used to make text-based posts feel more lively.
This isn't a new approach for Reddit. The platform has previously introduced a live video content format and has tested a TikTok-style video feed display several times.
Reddit also allows users to upload videos in the comments section, which now accounts for more than 10 percent of total video posts on the platform.
