TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The much-anticipated Marvel Ghost Rider project starring Ryan Gosling has finally received an official release date: July 28, 2028. The date was announced under Disney's updated release calendar following the D23 event last weekend.
The project was announced last July during the Hall H Panel at San Diego Comic-Con, with Gosling hailed as lead. "As you know, this is a character I've wanted to play for a very long time," Gosling said at the time.
The upcoming untitled Ghost Rider project will have director Shawn Levy at the helm, with a script from Jonathan Tropper.
This won't be the first Levy-Gosling project, as both are working together on Star Wars: Starfighter, which was also announced during D23 on Friday. The movie is set for theatrical release May 28, 2027.
Shaw Levy has also directed Deadpool & Wolverine (2024) for the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU).
In the upcoming Ghost Rider feature, Gosling is set to embody the antihero Spirit of Vengeance, but whether he'd be playing Johnny Blaze, Danny Ketch, or other iterations of the character remains to be seen.
The plot details of the new Gosling-led project is still kept under wraps.
On screen, Ghost Rider has been portrayed several times, with the most well-known iteration played by Nicolas Cage as Johnny Blaze in two Sony films.
Citing the entertainment news website Polygon, a Ghost Rider has, technically, joined the MCU before, with Gabriel Luna portraying Robbie Reyes in the TV series Agents of SHIELD. Though whether the multi-season series is actually canon to the MCU has long been a point of contention among fans.
Nevertheless, Feige said Ryan Gosling came to Marvel with a "specific vision" in mind for the character he wanted to play, "based on some particular comics," according to The Guardian.
Ghost Rider will join two other MCU installments for a 2028 release, slated between the new X-Men reboot, which will hit theaters on May 5 and the end-of-year Black Panther 3 on December 15.
