TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Russia warns members of the United Nations Security Council against pushing for a draft resolution deemed unilateral and confrontational concerning the situation in the Middle East. Moscow believes that such a move could trigger a new wave of escalation in the region.
According to a report from Anadolu on Thursday, May 7, 2026, Russia's Permanent Mission to the UN urged members of the UN Security Council not to "artificially heat tension" within the council by advocating for specific draft resolutions.
"We urge our UNSC colleagues to refrain from artificially stirring up tensions within the Council, inter alia by pushing through one-sided and confrontational draft resolutions, which – if adopted – may trigger a new wave of escalation in the Middle East with highly unpredictable consequences," they stated.
Russia Rejects US-Backed Anti-Iran Resolution
According to Press TV, Russia's Ambassador to the UN, Vasily Nebenzya, strongly rejected the U.S.-proposed anti-Iran resolution at the UN Security Council.
Nebenzya made the statement during the discussion on maritime security in the Persian Gulf. The United States and its allies were said to be pushing for a draft resolution unfairly targeting Iran's defensive measures in the Strait of Hormuz.
According to Press TV, Russia has repeatedly asserted that it will not support any document that solely blames Iran without addressing the root cause, which is the actions of the United States and Israel that are said to have destabilized the region.
"We reject any attempt to impose unbalanced narratives against Iran without considering the motives and root causes of the crisis," Nebenzya said.
He also warned that endorsing a biased resolution could lead to new tensions in the Middle East. "We warn that the adoption of biased resolutions may trigger a new wave of tensions in the Middle East region," he stated.
Russia Highlights Attacks on Iran
In its statement, Russia reiterated its commitment to the unconditional cessation of violence and a political and diplomatic resolution to the Iran conflict. Moscow also mentioned that the recent escalation in the Middle East is a direct consequence of the United States and Israel's attacks on Iran.
Russia stated that diplomatic channels should be safeguarded from various provocations, including harsh rhetoric and the use of military force, which is deemed to jeopardize the fragile negotiation process.
Russia also expressed support for Pakistan's mediation efforts in the conflict. "We support the relevant initiatives of our Pakistani friends and hope that their mediation efforts will yield the sought-after result," the statement read.
