TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Ministry of Social Affairs has distributed Rp1.9 billion in logistical assistance to survivors of the 6.3-magnitude earthquake that struck southwest of Seluma Regency, Bengkulu Province, in the early hours of Friday, May 23, 2025.
"Emergency aid, including basic necessities such as ready-to-eat meals, sleeping equipment, and family tents, was dispatched from the regional warehouse in Palembang," stated Minister of Social Affairs, Saifullah Yusuf, in a written statement from Jakarta on Friday, May 23, 2025.
The aid package includes 5,000 ready-to-eat meal packages, 1,000 instant food packages, 800 mattresses, 500 blankets, 400 family kits, 400 children's supplies, 500 roll tents, 80 portable family tents, and 10 multi-purpose tents.
In addition to logistical distribution, the ministry mobilized a Disaster Alertness Youth Team (Tagana) to several affected areas, including Bengkulu City, Seluma Regency, Central Bengkulu, and North Bengkulu. Tagana volunteers are responsible for monitoring conditions, documenting residents' needs, and providing direct field support.
The ministry also urges the public to remain calm and vigilant against potential aftershocks, advising them to refer to official information from the Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG), the National Disaster Mitigation Agency (BNPB), or local authorities.
The early morning earthquake caused panic among residents in several coastal areas of Bengkulu. Authorities and volunteers are currently collecting reports of damage.
As of now, there are no official reports regarding casualties or severe damage. The central government, through the Ministry of Social Affairs, affirmed its commitment to support affected residents until the situation stabilizes.
